چکیده

Collectivity in ensembles of atoms gives rise to effects like superand subradiance. While superradiance is well studied and experimentally accessible, subradiance remains elusive since it is difficult to track experimentally as well as theoretically. Here we present a new type of phase transition in the resonantly driven, open Dicke model that leads to a deterministic generation of subradiant states. At the transition the system switches from a predominantly superradiant to a predominantly subradiant state. Clear experimental signatures for the effect are presented and entanglement properties are discussed. Letting the system relax into the ground state generates a cascade of dark Dicke states, with dark state populations up to unity. Furthermore we introduce a collectivity measure that allows to quantify collective behavior. 1 ar X iv :1 70 5. 02 88 9v 2 [ qu an tph ] 1 2 Ju l 2 01 7

Depolarization shift of the superradiant phase transition

Quantum electrodynamics, when applied to a large ensemble of identical atoms, leads to the surprising prediction that a so-called superradiant phase transition takes place above a critical density of the atom gas. In thermal equilibrium and also in the ground state of the system at zero temperature, the atoms in the superradiant phase develop a polarization field with non-vanishing mean value a...

The GSI method for studying neutrino mass differences For Pedestrians

New experiment studying radioactive ion before K-capture weak decay suggests investigation of ν masses and mixing without detecting ν. Final state is coherent linear combination of two states with same energy and definite different momenta. Initial state contains two components with same definite momentum difference and slightly different energies. Energy-time uncertainty allows two components ...

Exotic quantum phase transitions in a Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to an optical cavity

An extended Dicke model, which includes atom-atom interactions and a driving classical laser field, is established for a Bose-Einstein condensate inside an ultrahigh-finesse optical cavity. A feasible experimental setup with a strong atom-field coupling is proposed, where most parameters are easily controllable and thus the predicted a second-order superradiant-normal phase transition may be de...

Excited-state phase transition and onset of chaos in quantum optical models.

We study the critical behavior of excited states and its relation to order and chaos in the Jaynes-Cummings and Dicke models of quantum optics. We show that both models exhibit a chain of excited-state quantum phase transitions demarcating the upper edge of the superradiant phase. For the Dicke model, the signatures of criticality in excited states are blurred by the onset of quantum chaos. We ...

Dicke-type phase transition in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate.

Spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) provide a powerful tool to investigate interesting gauge field-related phenomena. Here we study the ground state properties of such a system and show that it can be mapped to the well-known Dicke model in quantum optics, which describes the interactions between an ensemble of atoms and an optical field. A central prediction of the Dicke model ...
